Position of Women in Chinese Business

Since the advent of Communist society in 1949 the position of women in
Chinese society has changed dramatically

However, there are big variations

Only small numbers of Chinese women are in senior positions in business
and government

Foreign women in Chinese society get special respect by virtue of being
foreign

Its important to establish your credentials and expertise One way might
be to send an agenda with brief biographies before meetings

If you are leading a team observe and make sure the team observe
Chinese conventions - entering rooms, seating, and deference

Dress conservatively - trouser suits are entirely acceptable

Be prepared for staring - youre unusual

Be prepared for unintentional rudeness - cigarette smoke, slamming
doors, etc

Dont drink alcohol - moderation is expected A lot of women in China
dont drink

The Chinese appreciate patience, soft-spokenness, and perseverance
They dont appreciate boisterousness, impetuousness or anger They do
appreciate adaptability

Humility is important

If you see women being treated in ways you dont like it is important not
to be cautious in your reaction Remember you hold special status
NOTE:

Rank matters You dont need to trumpet your credentials and position but
they are important to the Chinese so it is wise not to downplay them
